SAFE BUS COMES TO SCCS
The SCCS transportation department has obtained the "Safe Bus" from the Owego-Apalachin Central School District. "Safe Bus" stands for Student Accident and Fire Evacuation. The bus will be on loan from January 29 through February 12, 2010.
The "Safe Bus" looks like a normal bus in the front, but the back half can be turned to simulate a roll over accident. Students will be able to see what a bus could look like in the event of an accident. They will be able to learn proper exiting methods with a hands-on approach in a safe environment. Each school, Emily Howland, Middle School and High School will have their own training sessions.
The use of the "Safe Bus" will also help in easing fears that students, especially the younger ones, may have. They will be able to visualize the scene of an accident and ask any questions they may have. Our bus drivers will also be able to walk away from this experience with the peace of mind knowing that their students have been through the training and will be able to respond to an accident situation with more confidence.
Local rescue responders will also be utilizing the "Safe Bus" for accident evacuation training while it is here. 2-2-10

December 22 Update on the Anne Frank Sapling
-
Southern Cayuga Central School
has been chosen as one of eleven sites in the United States to receive a chestnut tree sapling taken from the mother-tree that Anne Frank gazed at out of the attic window while in hiding in Amsterdam during World War II. The USDA has extended the quarantine period to three full years. The saplings have arrived stateside, however, we have decided to leave our sapling under the care
of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation in a greenhouse there with two other sapplings. We are planning a visit sometime in 2010. The additional time for quarantine gives us plenty of time to plan for the actual planting and dedication celebration. 12/22/09
