Principal's Message
February 2010 - Hello and welcome to the SCHS website! Please click on the above links for our daily announcements.
Greetings! It is hard to believe that we are more than half-way through the school year. As we start the second semester many students have begun new courses. Also, we are starting to schedule students for the 2010-2011 school year. If you have not already, please review with your child their course selections for next year. The SCHS course offerings guide is available via the following link: click here . Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
As I stated in our last newsletter, we are phasing out our AP course offerings. Although, students taking college classes may still take AP exams for college credit. With this in mind, we will be offering additional SUPA (Syracuse University) college classes in addition to our CCC and TC3 offerings for the 2010-2011 school year. The following SUPA classes will be offered (pending student enrollment): English (two semester courses - Reading & Writing) Accounting, Entrepreneurship, US History, Economics, and Public Affairs.
We took the following data into consideration in phasing out AP course offerings and adding SUPA courses. Maximum score on an AP exam is a five. Usually, colleges accept a four or five for college credit. Over the past four years, we have had the following total percentage of students receive a four or five on the AP exams we offer: 2006: 12%; 2007: 25%; 2008: 13%; 2009: 4%. Using this information, very few students were receiving college credit for AP exams. Thus, it is a prudent choice to offer college affiliated courses with the option of the AP exam rather than just the AP course.
Other reasons behind the shift to SUPA is teacher support, class rigor, and credit based on work throughout the semester. AP credit is based solely on the exam score not the student's work throughout the semester. In addition, SUPA offers training each summer as well as a teacher mentor at Syracuse University. The support provided to our teachers within the SUPA program will only enhance their ability to prepare our students for the demands of college.
Finally, we are planning a college credit course information night for high school parents sometime this spring (date TBA). That evening will allow parents to better understand the benefits and expectations of our college course offerings.
